Do you know the logic behind your PAN Card?

PAN (Permanent Account Number) card is a unique identification tool issued by Government of India. It is a very important document for an individual.

Why do you need a PAN Card?

It not only serves as an identity proof but it also necessary to have a Pan card in order to enter into certain financial transactions such as receiving professional fees in excess of Rs 30,000 (As TDS will have to be deducted in this case)

Basically it provides a unique identity to every Assessee. (Individual, Partnership Firms, Companies, e.t.c)

In fact these days even for opening a bank account you will have to give a xerox copy of your Pan card.

Pan card in India is a 10 character letter which contains some words and some numbers.

Here's the logic to pan cards alpha numeric characters.

1. The first 5 character are alphabets.
2. Then there are 4 numbers.
3. And the last character is again an alphabet.

This totals to 10 characters.

The logic behind these random 10 character letters?

1. The 1st there characters are random alphabets like AAA.
2. The 4th character depends upon the pan card holder.

For example if the pan card holder is a company the 4th letter will be C, similarly if the pan card holder is and individual person the 4th letter will be P and so on.

Examples:-
Individual - P
Partnership Firm - F
Company - C
HUF - H
AOP - A
Trust - T
and so on.

4. The 5th character is the first character of your your surname in case of an individual and first character of name in case of others.

For example: - If your surname is Thakur, the fifth character of your PAN card will be "T".

If the name of your Partnership firm is "Mehta & Associates" the fifth character of your PAN card will be M.

5. Characters from 6 to 9 are random numbers and the 10th character is a random check alphabet.

So Basically the 4th character will tell you about the type of assesses and the 5th character will tell you the first letter of the assesses last name.
